CHARLIE ANGUS' LETTER TO SUPPORTERS - OCTOBER 16, 2018
The return to Parliament following a week of work in the riding has been very busy and I wanted to share some of the issues I've been working on.
CPP INVESTING IN PRIVATIZED US PRISONS
This past week British paper The Guardian reported that the Canada Pension Plan is investing in privatized prisons, weapons manufacturers and cigarette companies. Privatized US prisons are racking up record profits because of the Trump policy of targeting migrant families into prison camps.
When I asked Finance Minister Bill Morneau about the decision by the CPP Board to make money from this reprehensible practice, he said it reflected the "highest standard of ethics."
TAKING ON RIGHT-WING EXTREMISTS
This past week Bell Media and Rogers rejected ads from a person promoting anti-Muslim and anti-Semitic politics. This has resulted in a lawsuit against Bell. In the article below, it was pointed out that my efforts to raise awareness about this candidate helped Bell make their decision. I congratulate Bell for standing up against the spread of extremist politics. You can read more about this issue here.
WHAT TAX FAIRNESS REALLY MEANS
Watch this speech in the House where I compare the treatment of single moms being forced to jump through hoops to obtain their child tax benefit and the lax treatment given to the super-rich who are hiding their wealth in offshore tax havens. We need to ensure that tax rules are targeting the uber-rich who are refusing to pay their fair share.
