CHARLIE ANGUS' LETTER TO SUPPORTERS - NOVEMBER 29, 2018
"Our democratic institutions ... seem to have been upended by frat-boy billionaires from California." - Charlie Angus
This letter comes to you from London, England where for the past week, I've had the honour of representing Canada as part of an unprecedented international parliamentary investigation into Facebook's failure to address misinformation, data breaches and being used to undermine democratic elections around the world.
Mark Zuckerberg was supposed to be the key witness at these hearings. He decided not to show up.
The international grand committee, with legislators from the UK, France, Belgium, Argentina, Singapore, Brazil and Latvia, asked me to lead off the questioning.
My exchange with Facebook's head of UK operations Richard Allan was covered by media outlets across Europe and North America.
At the end of the grueling two hour committee hearing the UK Chair Damian Collins asked me to take one final round where I focused on the need to look at anti-trust provisions to deal with the unprecedented market power of Facebook.
This exchange was widely covered in American business and tech journals.
My work is about ensuring democratic forums for ideas and opinions that are not undermined by platform manipulation, bot networks or extremist groups. I look forward to hearing from you on this issue.
