CHARLIE ANGUS' LETTER TO SUPPORTERS - DECEMBER 7, 2018
As 2018 draws to a close, a year that has been turbulent politically and economically, I just want to highlight some of the impressive work of my colleagues in Parliament. The media doesn't often report on the incredible work being done by New Democrat MPs on a daily basis on a multitude of issues.
GEORGINA JOLIBOIS THE "VOICE OF THE REMOTE"
Georgina Jolibois, MP for Desenethe-Missinippi-Churchill, was voted Best Constituency MP of the Year by Macleans Magazine. She represents a huge region of northern Saskatchewan, often having to drive 14 hours between communities. Georgina has succeeded in having National Aboriginal Day recognized as a holiday. She is a powerful Indigenous voice in the House of Commons.
SCOTT DUVALL'S RELENTLESS FIGHT FOR PENSION SECURITY
MP Scott Duvall (Hamilton Mountain) has been a champion for Sears and Stelco employees. He's been working hard for all those who risk losing their pensions because the government refuses to provide proper pension protection during company bankruptcies. Our party will continue to fight hard to change the law.
GORD JOHNS WINS FOR VETERANS
Over the last three years, the Liberal government shortchanged veterans and their families by $372 million. This at a time of crisis for many suffering PTSD or needing support for reintegration after their experience in Afghanistan. MP Gord Johns (Courtenay-Alberni) took on the Liberal government over the old tactic of announcing support for veterans, re-announcing the support and then failing to spend the money. He pushed a motion through the House calling on government to ensure that money that is promised for veterans services will actually be set aside to serve veterans.
DON DAVIES ON OPIOID CRISIS
In the last two years alone, there have been over 9,000 deaths from the opioid crisis in Canada. MP Don Davies (Vancouver-Kingsway) has been pushing the government to take a much stronger role in working with the provinces and territories. One of the areas we need to move on is actually launching lawsuits against the big drug companies who promoted opioids which resulted in so many people becoming addicted across the country. The BC NDP government is taking on big pharma as are numerous American states. The Canadian government needs to do more.
I am inspired by the important work our caucus is engaged in and proud to be part of this passionate and relentless team. There is no question that hard-working Canadian families are at the heart of every decision and action taken by our team.
