CHARLIE ANGUS' LETTER TO SUPPORTERS - AUGUST 14, 2018
"Can you imagine any former Foreign Affairs Minister - Mike Pearson, Lloyd Axworthy, Joe Clark - acting in such a sniveling manner before such a brutal regime? Canada needs to stand up for human rights." - Charlie Angus
Friends,
I've been receiving a great deal of feedback for calling out John Baird's appearance on Saudi state TV. I said that it was appalling that Baird was telling viewers that Prime Minister Trudeau needed to personally fly to Saudi Arabia and apologize for speaking up over the abuse of women and political dissidents.
You can read the full article here.
But sometimes you just have to call things out for what they are.
Baird is deeply connected to Barrick who have financial interests in Saudi Arabia. He is selling out our values to a brutal regime. Although I don't normally use profanity in political discussion, he personifies "Shitbird Politics 101."
Where should Canada stand on international human rights?
Results from my recent Get Involved Survey showed that Canadians want a credible and strong presence on the international stage. And yet, under the Trudeau and Harper governments, Canada has become the second largest supplier of arms in the Middle East.
We can do better.
We can stand up for a credible human rights policy and end the sale of weapons into this zone of conflict. I look forward to hearing your views on the role we should play in dealing with the Saudi regime.
Thank you, Charlie
